What is the maximum arm velocity?

The maximum arm velocity is 2m/s although operationally speeds of 1m/s are used to get the best accuracy.

What is the maximum load per arm for Baxter?

To adhere to the safety restrictions for ISO 10218 Baxter is limited to 2.2KG per arm. However, loads of up to 25KG are possible but would require safety inhibitors to be switched off.

What is the setup time to switch between users? 

Baxter doesn’t require any re-setting or user management to differentiate between researchers, teachers, students and outreach work so the time to switch between users is negligible.

What makes Baxter safe to work next to?

Baxter is certified to ISO 10218 which is the International Standard for robotics. This certification is achieved through the patented Series Elastic Actuator on each joint along with the force sensing feedback which stops Baxter from moving when it comes into contact with an object. By designing by hardware and software based safety systems Baxter is inherently safe to work alongside.

How can I programme Baxter?

The Baxter Research Robot is built on a standard Robot Operating System (ROS) framework and can be programmed using C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, Urbi, C and .Net which makes Baxter extremely versatile across a range of uses.

How much does Baxter weigh?

The Baxter’s combined weight is 139kg (306lbs), the torso weighs 75kgs (165lbs) and the Pedestal weighs 64kg (141lbs). Each arm individually weighs 20kg but with the Zero Gravity mode they feel light as a feather.

What is Zero Gravity Mode?

In Zero Gravity mode Baxter provides gravity torque compensation to each joint so that when you mover the arm each joint is ‘powered’ to move, similar to power steering in cars.

How easily can I change the end effectors?

The end effectors are mounted using 2 Allen key bolts, simply unscrew them and disconnect the interface from the end effector, swap with the other end effector, re-connect the interface and re-screw the bolts to finish. Baxter self-calibrates the end effector so there’s nothing further to be done.

What end effectors can I mount to Baxter?

The end effector mounting plate is open source so you can download this and create any end effectors you would like. There are currently 2 standard end effectors made by Rethink Robotics as well as third party ones such as the Robotiq Adaptive Gripper.

How big is NAO?

The latest NAO V5 is 58cms tall and weighs 4.3kgs.

Can I get Apps for NAO?

Yes you can. There are a range of Apps available for NAO from the Aldebaran App Store and there are more currently in development. With the NAO Developer Package you can even create your own Apps to sell on the App Store. Our favourite is ‘Play the Ball’.

How many languages can NAO speak?

NAO can currently speak 19 languages which are: Arabic, Brazilian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Russian and Turkish.

How can I programme NAO?

NAO can be programmed using C++, Python, Java, MATLAB, Urbi, C,.Net as well as the Choreographe software.
